SAYREVILLE, NJ – Crowds flooded into New Jersey’s Starland Ballroom on Wednesday, May 10th to see the highly anticipated We Will Detonate Tour, headlined by Pierce The Veil and Sum 41, with support from Emarosa and Chapel.
Motionless In White are back yet again with their new release, Graveyard Shift. This band has always had a knack for genre transition, and Graveyard Shift is no exception. They stay on the industrial path they’ve been going down with tracks like “Queen For Queen” and “Necessary Evil,” the latter of which features Jonathan Davis, frontman of Nu-Metal juggernaut, Korn. MIW also introduce a more punk-inspired vibe on their single, “Loud(Fuck It).” Most refreshing to hear is that they’re not afraid to still get heavy, which is obviously apparent on the ironically titled, “Soft.”
Terror, one of the most well known and respected hardcore bands around, have released their new EP The Walls Will Fall and it quite literally crushes. Though it is only five songs – including a cover of Madball‘s “Step To You” – the EP emits just as much energy and passion as any of their full-lengths.
What makes The Walls Will Fall such a great addition to Terror’s discography is that it is both more accessible than their earlier material while also being as hard as ever. Because it is just an EP, it is a breath of fresh air and just enough for Terror fans to get their fix. This length works for them extremely well, bringing out the best of old school hardcore: quick, brutal and to the point.
Crystal Lake‘s new record True North instantly tops the must-have list for fans of all genres of heavy music. It’s got the instrumental complexity that metalheads love, hardcore heaviness (“Six Feet Under”), killer metalcore vocals, and even electronic and rap influences. OK, we know some of you instantly got scared at the mention of the “R-word”, but trust us, “Hatred” is one of the best songs on the album.
Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Crystal Lake have made a name for themselves internationally with their first couple of records, and True North is going to push them over the edge. No matter how heavy they get, they are equal parts melodic and artistic, as exemplified by the title track on the new record. This is an example of a band whose cover art does their sound complete justice. Their most beautiful musical moments sound like watercolor brought to life.
If you don’t buy this album, you’re making bad choices with your life. It is nothing short of sensational.

Finding music that is consistently compelling is definitely a challenge nowadays, but New Jersey metal band Monument Of A Memory accomplish the task with just one EP. In five songs, Catharsis keeps you on your toes and excites at all turns. From opener “Affliction” to the appropriately named final track “Departure,” Monument Of A Memory shred, scream and chug with a genuine fire. At the very first listen of the opening lines “Run, run, run for your life!”, you will be captivated and won’t want to go anywhere else. Keep an eye out for Catharsis, due to be released July 8th. In the meantime, check out their bandcamp and give them some love!
The rambunctious, poetic, bouncy, and melodic Brits in Enter Shikari accomplished their mission to take us on a musical journey as we moved through highs and lows, covering a wide spectrum of emotion. From “Constellations” to “Mothership,” “The Paddington Frisk,” and an assortment of tracks from The Mindsweep, their electronic, energetic entertainment included a trumpeting Reynolds, a crowdsurfing amp with Rory Clewlow standing on it while playing, and Rory Clewlow walking across the VIP over the bar and into the stairs and seating in the back of the venue, amongst other shenanigans. Their live performance is guaranteed to keep you off your feet. Enter Shikari can make you move whether you want to or not.

WEBSTER HALL, NYC – On the last day of their tour together (April 17th), I went to see August Burns Red, Between the Buried and Me and Good Tiger. I’ll be honest and admit that I didn’t do my homework. I had no clue what Good Tiger was, who was in it, or what they sound like. The groovy, almost funky, sometimes metalcore, always catchy sounds came fast and unexpectedly. Elliot Coleman’s high pitched singing mostly stayed constant even when the instrumentals started picking up the pace. This was the perfect melodic opener to Between the Buried and Me’s rhythmic brand of progressive metal.
